New Study Takes Aim at Soda’s Effect on Heart Health

on

It’s no secret that drinking soda on a daily basis is bad for your health and a new study takes aim at soda’s effect on heart health.

Packing as much as 40 grams of sugar in a single 12-ounce serving, these sugary beverages have been linked to a wide variety of diseases and adverse health conditions, some of which include diabetes, obesity, cancer, and heart disease.

But a new study has found another adverse health effect of soda: heart failure.

Researchers from the U.K. found that men who drank just two sodas per day had a 23% higher risk of heart failure when compared to men who refrained from drinking sodas. To come to this conclusion, researchers closely monitored to the eating (and drinking) habits of some 42,000 men in Sweden.

As you may already know, heart failure is a medical condition in which the heart becomes weak and is no longer able to pump blood and oxygen throughout the body. It’s attributed to tens of thousands of deaths in the United States each year.

Does this mean you should cut sodas out from your diet? There’s nothing wrong with an occasional soda or sugary beverage, but unfortunately many people drink them on a daily basis, sometimes consuming as many as three or four servings each day. When you consume this amount of sugary, acidic liquid, it wrecks havoc on your body in more ways than just one.

Instead of drinking soda, you should stick with pure H2O. Even sports drinks and so-called vitamin-infused beverages are ridden with sugar. Humans have been drinking water for thousands of years. As such, our bodies are designed to process water in a safe and effective manner — something that cannot be said for soda or other sugary beverages.

To put the problem of sodas into perspective, a separate study published in the journal Circulation attributed soda consumption to an estimated 184,000 global deaths per year.

This study was published in the journal BMJ.
