Avoiding Juicing Mistakes
Juicing raw fruits and vegetables on a regular basis can lead to better health, but you’ll want to learn about avoiding juicing mistakes.
Studies have shown that people who consume a well-balanced diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables are less susceptible to heart disease, diabetes and obesity; therefore, they will naturally have a longer life expectancy than those who opt for fast food meals during the week.
Juicing is a simple way to achieve a well-balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables. Just toss some of your favorite items into a juicer and turn them into a ready-to-drink beverage. However, to get the most benefit from your juicer, you’ll want to avoid some of these common mistakes.
According to the Center for Disease Control, most people with moderate levels of daily activity should consume between 2-4 servings of fruit each day. While some fruit is food for you, too much can place stress on your system as a result of the excessive sugar. Many people don’t realize just how much sugar certain fruit contains. A regular-sized banana contains roughly 25 grams of sugar, and that can easily add up when you begin juicing multiple bananas mixed with other fruits.
There’s nothing wrong with juicing fruits and vegetables on occasion, but you should try to focus more on vegetables rather than fruits. Leafy greens are prime sources of vitamin A, C, K, folate and disease-fighting phytochemicals. If you don’t like the taste of bland leafy greens in a salad, toss them into a juicer with a little bit of fruit juice. Juicers make changing the flavor of something you ordinarily wouldn’t like quick and easy.
Another all-too-common mistake beginners make when juicing is not consuming enough protein. A hearty glass of well-juiced fruits and veggies can easy leave you with a full stomach and full of energy. The problem, however, is that you probably aren’t supplementing your diet with the protein necessary for muscle growth, development and repair. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with nutrients, but they have little-to-no protein. You can fix this problem by mixing a scoop or two of protein in with your juiced vegetables. Contrary to popular belief, there are several brands of protein powder that are delicious and easy to drink.
After you’re done juicing, you’ll want to clean it in a timely manner. Allowing the juices from raw fruits and vegetables to sit your juicer can lead to the development of harmful bacteria, which is why you need to get into the habit of cleaning it after each use. If you’re unsure on how to clean your juicer, take a minute or two to flip through the instruction manual. Most high-quality juicers are built to come apart in just a few easy steps, so you should be able to clean them in a couple minutes of your spare time.
When used correctly, juicing will help supplement your diet with essential vitamins and nutrients that promote good health. Just remember to avoid the common mistakes listed here to ensure you get the full benefit from your juicing efforts.
