Acupuncture Treats Shoulder Pain
If you experience pain, swelling or general discomfort in one or both of your shoulders, you should know that acupuncture treats shoulder pain and quite effectively. Shoulder pain is an all-too-common problem that affects millions of Americans. While some people may simply brush it off and continue to go about their day-to-day lives, it’s important to find out what’s causing the problem. If certain shoulder problems are left untreated, they could lead to further damage and pain. Here we’ll take a closer look at some of the most common causes of shoulder pain.
One of the most common types of shoulder injuries is a torn rotator cuff. If you’ve played sports in the past, you’ve probably heard of players suffering from this injury. So, what exactly is a torn rotator cuff? Well, as you may already know, the shoulder is comprised of a ball and joint system in which the humerus bone rubs into a boney groove. This is essentially what gives your arm movement. The rotator cuff is group of tendons and muscles that holds this boney groove together. If one or more of these muscles are torn, it can be incredibly painful and even difficult for the individual to move his or her arm.
Rest and relaxation are the two key elements required for treating a torn rotator cuff. If you continue to use the affected shoulder, it won’t have the downtime necessary to heal. As a result, you’ll only make the problem worse by adding more tears to the already damaged muscle fibers. Talk with your doctor to see what they recommend. Most importantly, follow their advice to ensure you receive a fast and full recovery.
Bursitis (AKA rotator cuff tendonitis) is another common cause of shoulder pain. Like other forms of tendonitis, bursitis is characterized by extreme inflammation. In this particular case, the top of the humerus bone along with the top of the rotator cuff are inflamed, making it difficult for the individual to move their arm and shoulder in a normal fashion. Depending on the severity of the condition, bursitis can also be quite painful.
Frozen Shoulder is yet another type of shoulder problem that often creates a painful sensation. It’s characterized by an inflamed shoulder that ultimately results in the production of scar tissue; thus, making it difficult for the shoulder to work properly. While the exact cause of Frozen Shoulder is unknown, there are some factors that will greatly increase your risk. The majority of Frozen Shoulder cases occur in individuals between the ages of 45-65, and it’s also more common in women than in men. With that said, there have been Frozen Shoulder cases in people of all ages, gender and background.
